1856-Can't wait to try this!
2 de Mayo7.0Nice 2 player warish game. Very quick and simple ruleswise. Thematic in a strange way. So far the French were unable to win, but we are still newbies. Let's see if we can change this soon. A very worthy first effort by the designer. I expect to play this one a lot, in the future.
A Victory Lost-Can't wait to try it.
Age of Steam9.0I really love this game, but it's difficult to find players to play it because it's so unforgiving. It's tense, it's deep and has a very low luck factor. It's my first and probably still my favourite Martin Wallace game. I definatly have to try and get it on the table more often!
Agricola9.5After a very long and painful wait, it finally arrived... and it's awesome! First, there's the tension. Players are hard pressed to feed their families during the harvest season and it's not easy. To make things worse, the number of turns between each harvest season diminishes, as the game progresses, so it becomes mandatory to use the early game to build the food engine. Fail to do that and you'll be in big trouble later on... Then, the cards! A lot was said about the cards and how they can unbalance the game... but I think they're great! They force the players to think creatively and adapt their strategies to their hand of cards and that can produce some incredible results. I've seen players use wacky strategies, so they can maximize their perceived bad hand... and get away with it! Finally, this is the definition of agonizing decisions! In every turn players are forced to choose 1 action from a huge lot of almost equally useful options and I always feel as if with just one more action I would be able to do a lot more. The theme is very closely integrated with the mechanics. Crops grow, animals reproduce, you need ovens to bake bread, and fireplaces to cook the meat. Things make sense and that makes the game oh so much easier to teach. For all this, I think playing Agricola is a fun, deep and rewarding experience. This is one heck of a game! And I'm still discovering the E deck. I and K decks are still waiting for their turn...
Alhambra6.0Nice area majority game. Good components, very simple rules and interesting depth. It's a better, more strategic and predictable game with fewer players.
Antiquity9.0In the words of the immortal Bartholomew J. Simpson: ai caramba! The tension reminds me of Age of Steam pre-breakeven times 20! This is a complex economy building game, with lots of resources and buildings to manage. This is also one of the first worker placement games... and a very unique one! The idea is to have the players build a very complex economic engine as efficiently as possible while trying to fight famine and pollution at the same time. There are a lot of resources to manage and a lot of options to use them. This is a really heavy game. The player interaction is small in the beginning, but grows as the game progresses and players start to fight for territory and resources. Luck is almost non existent. The only complaint I have is that the game is fiddly, with a lot of small moving parts and very, very expensive. But if you can cope with that, this is an awesome experience which I heartedly recommend!
Backgammon7.0Excellent abstract racing game! Very simple rules, quick playing time and the right amount of luck make this a classic. A german game designed long before Germany even existed as a political entity.
Battle for Hill 218, The7.0Very nice. I've just played this one a couple of times, but so far, so good. Somebody described it as Hive for wargamers, and I think it's a pretty accurate description! It's a very fast and simple abstract, like Hive, but with some military flavor and some luck, to please the wargamer in each of us. And I would love a bakelite edition! ;) Rating could go up.
Before the Wind-Only one 2P game.
Blue Moon City7.0Tentative rating. I'm still not sure about this one. It's got pretty pieces and simple rules but I fear that the first player has a big advantage on the 2p game. It's a weird game and difficult to fully understand. I need to play it more. Rating may go up or down. [UPDATE]: Played another 2p game in which the 1st player lost badly. My fears about 1st player advantage vanished. Rating went up (7.5-8).
Bohnanza7.0Nice and simple negotiation game. Have to play it more often, but I liked what I saw so far. Rating could go up.
Brass6.0UPDATE: the more I play it, the less I like it. Approaching 10 plays and it's starting to feel repetitive. I always ignore shipyards, I always go for cotton + ports and I always do very well. I'm not getting rid of it yet, because I think it can improve if played with more experienced opponents. UPDATE: Downgraded the rating after one more play. The end game can be painfully gamey sometimes. It's still a solid 8. A complex economics game with a lot of interesting decisions. I really like the 2 distinct phases and the neat mix between setting up your economic engine and growing your distribution network. It's a little too involved ruleswise, with a lot of minor exceptions which cause a lot of rule mistakes in the first few games. Also, I think the game lasts longer than it should, so players are milking the game for points in the last turns. But this is still a very nice game and one of Martin Wallace's best.
Played, but in very good condition. Want to trade for Tinners' Trail.
Byzantium8.0This is, im my opinion, an underrated game. It's one of my top 3 Martin Wallace games, along with Age of Steam and Princes of the Renaissance. It's a little bit more complex ruleswise than any of the other 2 games, but it's also more thematic and unusual. Like some other Wallace games (including Age of Steam and to a lesser extent Princes of the Renaissance), it's not a game that's easy to digest on the first play and it's truly a gamer's game, not suitable for people not used to playing boardgames.
Caesar Cleopatra6.0Play it a few times. An ok game, but never clicked with me. If I'm only playing 2 players I prefer Lost Cities, EuphratTigris or Hannibal, depending on the time constraints. :)
Very good condition. Played 3 or 4 times and that's it. Both the cards and the box are practically new.
Carcassonne: The Castle8.0Enjoy it a lot more than vanilla carcassonne. Very nice two player game!
Carolus Magnus8.0Played mostly with 2 players and the general consensus seems to be that 3 player is the way to play it, so the rating can still go up. With 2 players this is a very good game that impressed me a lot! The rules are very simple and easy to explain. So easy in fact that we were playing without any errors 10 minutes after reading them for the first time. The gameplay on the other hand is amazing! The merging of the regions is pure genius! It plays quickly but it IS a real brain burner! I like the dice to replenish your court and had no problem with them at all. However, if I feel that they are in fact a problem, there are several easy variants already suggested. With 3 players, the game seems to loose some of the predictability that allows for some planning ahead. But I'm not a very good player and only played it 3p once, so it's possible that my own limitations are preventing me from planning ahead and not the game. Have to played more with 3p to know for sure.
Catan: Cities Knights8.0It totally transforms basic settlers, making it a much heavier game, with a lot of paths to victory and multiple possible strategies. However, this makes the game less accessible to beginners, much longer and less elegant.
Caylus9.5Perfect information with lots of choices and lots of different paths to victory. It's a resource optimization game but without the infamous snowball effect. The available options increase as the players build their buildings. It's a real no luck brain burner, perfect for those, like me, who enjoy these types of games. It's really deeper than the ocean. A very impressive first effort from Mr. Attia!
Chicago Express9.0Wow, this is a nasty game! Players will help each other at times, only to try to stab each other in the back later. It's about setting yourself up in a way that will make others help you when they help themselves. It's also about not putting yourself in such a position that allows others to screw you without screwing themselves in the process. The rules are quite simple, but It's not a game for beginners at all! One of the best in 2007. Rating can definitely go up.
Chinatown-
Colossal Arena7.0Good Knizia, with a lot of agonizing decisions and bluffing. Surprisingly acceptable with only 2 players, but much better with more. Needs to see more table time!
Combat Commander: Europe9.0The more I play this, the more I enjoy it. I think it really does a great job at recreating the chaos and disorientation of a combat situation. I love the card playing system, which allows for very fluid gameplay and you gotta love those events! Of course there are a lot of random elements, of course there will be situations were the game will be decided by luck... but that's war for you! And this is a really fun game! You get to play around with flamethrowers, assault buildings, lay down wire, throw some smoke grenades, see heroes rise and perform great deeds... this is band of brothers stuff! Sometimes your plans will work. In others, everything will fail and you'll be forced to take desperate actions... and be lucky enough to get away with it! Really amazing design! Rating just keeps getting up!
Commands Colors: Ancients9.5Wow! Amazing game! The game is dripping with theme and the CC system is really perfect for the period. Battlelore was a big disappointment, Memoir 44 is fun, and this is the one masterpiece in the whole line. How can you not love a game that allows you to remake the battle of cannae in 1h.30m and finnisth it with a feeling of utter satisfaction, after beating hannibal by a nose? All that sticking really paid off and I'm getting all the expansions! :)
Conflict of Heroes: Awakening the Bear! - Russia 1941-1942-
Confucius8.0Still discovering this, but I'm very impressed so far. The gift giving mechanic is awesome and very well integrated. The game as a whole is deep and rewarding. The first session was a little strange, maybe because the game is so unique that we didn't really know what we were doing. The second session was much better! I'll give it an 8 for now, but it'll probably go up.
Conquest of Paradise8.0Kevin McPartland, the designer, as stated that he wanted this to be a simulation above all, and I think he accomplished that and managed to design a great game also. Everything feels very thematic but, at the same time, the game has a small and compact rule set. Exploring is fun and well implemented and finding the right balance between economy and war is not easy. It's hard to defend everything and the combat system really encourages the less fortunate players to try and grab the stuff they need from the others. The cards provide additional flavor and can have some devastating effects, so it's a good idea to draw some. And if you lose, you can always complain about the dice luck, or the unfortunate exploring. :)
Conquest of the Empire6.0I think this is a fine game, with a lot of interesting choices and some bloody battles to fight. It's not my favourite martin wallace game, but it's a fun game to play with the right group. A word of warning: the map is incredibly huge and by that I really mean incredibly huge... UPDATE: Downgraded it's rating a bit because it never get's played. It takes too long.
Container9.5It's an economic game unlike any other I've played. Players completely drive the economy and can asphyxiate it if they are not careful. It seems to be all about pricing, but it isn't. Setting the right prices at the right times is important, but there are a lot of very subtle dependencies that players need to take into account to be successful. Anticipating the trends and adapting is the key to success. It reminds me of modern art, but with a lot more depth and options. I've read about how players can compromise the game for everybody, if they play badly, but that hasn't been an issue in our games at all. This is truly a masterpiece of game design from the late Franz-Benno Delonge, his magnum opus! UPDATE: Increased the rating to 9.5 after yet another very rewarding game!
Die Macher-Just two incomplete plays. Not enough to give it a fair rating.
El Grande9.5Really love this game. A very elegant design, it's much more tactical than strategical (although some kind of medium term strategy is not absent) thus allowing for a lot of creativity in the game play. It's one of those games which always creates a very good mood around the table, with everybody threatening everybody else, shouting, planning or offering advice. Pure gaming pleasure for everybody! :)
Elasund: The First City of Catan7.0This is a wonderful, confrontational and nasty game! Excellent with 2, 3 and 4 players. Very well done Klaus! This is NOT Settlers of Catan!
End of the Triumvirate, The7.0Excellent game! It's a very good perfect information 3 player game. Multiple paths to victory, highly confrontational and not too long. All the little moving parts fit together to make a coeherent and apparently balanced whole. all the rules are there for a purpose. Looking forward for the next time it hits the table.
Fairy Tale7.0I really, really enjoy this, but it wasn't well received in our group. It's too bad, because it's a very fast and interesting little game. Need to try the team variant. Rating can go up.
Felix: The Cat in the Sack8.0
Friedrich-Just one play so far, but enjoyed a lot! The simple mechanics make for a very deep game. Looking forward to play it again!
Fury of Dracula-
Ghost Stories8.0Bought this at the peak of the Space Alert induced coop fever. Everybody was buying Pandemic, so I got this instead. Played this once with a few rules wrong, but we had a lot of fun. Played a few times more with the correct rules (I hope) and it got better. I had read some people complaining about the game being too hard, but we didn't have too much trouble to beat the introductory level after 4 or 5 games.
Glory to Rome8.0Wonderful resource management/economy building game. Fairly simple rules, highly complex game play and a ton of stuff to explore make this a must have for anyone who likes complex economy building games. There's a lot of stuff to manage, a lot of interconnected mechanics, a good deal of player interaction and it's all playable in 1 hour, give or take a few minutes. The artwork isn't brilliant and component quality is also subpar. However the game more than makes up for it. Ah, and it's very good 2p and seems to scale well also! Comparing this to San Juan, is like comparing a paper plane to a 747.
Great Wall of China-
Hannibal: Rome vs. Carthage9.0This is a wonderfull game! It's one of my 2 wargames (the other one is Command and Colours: Ancients) and by the looks of it I'll have to start buying more! In Hannibal there are 2 planes of struggle: one political and one military. You influence regions and you fight your opponent's armies. One of the clever things about this game is the way both subgames are integrated and influence each other. When you loose a battle, there are repercussions on the political plane and that's great! The card driven system is also amazing. You get a lot of historical flavour without too much added complexity, it allows for clever tactical play and is always a source of difficult decisions. Amazing! Playtime is around 3/4 hours for us but I suspect it can decrease with experience. That's not too much, for a game like this.
Hive8.0Fast, fun and cool. I don't usually like abstracts and this is the big exception. It's very easy to explain, a game plays in 10/15 minutes and the cool bakelite pieces make this the ideal travel game. It's one of those games where a player can really improve his/her skill with repeated plays. This is the star of the summer!
Imperial9.5Imperial is THE Essen release! It's a deep, thematic and thought provoking game, with simple rules and a reasonable playing time! And the rondel is the touch of genius that makes it a true classic! Good quality components, no luck, almost perfect information (money is hidden) and 3 hours of wheeling, dealing and playing with Europe's fate! Just plain fun! Amazing!
In the Shadow of the Emperor-
In the Year of the Dragon9.0Simple mechanics, always want to do more than you can, tough decisions... this is an instant classic in the best Alea style! It can be 2007's game of the year. Need to play it more!
Indonesia9.0Wow! Is this game amazing or what? Splotter always delivers and they really made it this time! This is a really interesting advanced economics game! You've got your suppliers (the production companies), you've got your demand (the cities), and you've got your transporters (shipping companies). Suppliers need transporters to sell their production for profit and transporters need suppliers so they can put their ships to good use. If these two work well together they'll bring progress to the region and the cities will get bigger, making for even more demand and in the end everybody will be rich. :)
Kaivai9.0Wow, talk about absurdly underrated gem! I need to play this more often. Wait, I'll rephrase: I need to play this everyday, because this is one of the deepest, most complex, interesting and intriguing games I haver ever played. In fact, this is so deep and complex that it scared some of my regular playing partners away.Someone once described it as puerto rico with a board, but I think it's much more than that. Positional play is important, timing is very important (in fact, I think that staying out of phase with the other players is the most crucial aspect of the game) and there's plenty of room for strategy and tactics. And the components are great. All of this to say that Kaivai is a really complex and engaging economic game. A game like no other and one of the best in my collection. I need to play more, but I can only see the rating go up from here.
King of Siam7.0Interesting and unusual, but also very dry, abstract and, for this reason, a bit difficult to get to the table. I think the rating can go up with more plays.
Kogge-
Kutschfahrt zur Teufelsburg, die-
La Città7.0Great game! Very unusual mechanics, beautiful components, deep and interesting gameplay! It's one of those games that grows with each play as the subtle strategies unfold before the players.Scales very well, from 2 to 4. The 5 player game is too long, in my opinion.
Le Havre9.0Heavy efficiency game. Heavier than Agricola and at least as heavy as Caylus, the game that inspired both. This is actually much closer to Caylus than Mr. Rosenberg's previous effort. There are a lot of resources to be collected, refined and then used to build buildings, which allow new actions to be performed, or ships, which allow goods to be exchanged for money. In the end, the richest man wins. The number of options available grows exponentially, as players build buildings, there's a lot of different ways to achieve your goals and almost zero luck. Solo mode is actually very interesting. I think this can be a real classic. Not so appealing to non gamers, but a real challenge for those who like these types of games. Rating may go up.
Logistico7.0Another great one from cwali! Simple rules (3 or 4 pages), good components and brain burning depth. You really have to use your brain to plan your moves and coordinate your deliveries properly. There's a definite learning curve and things can be a bit tough to the first timers. It's also quite abstract and a little dry, so it can scare away some players. But for those who don't mind this relative dryness and have the determination to overcome the learning curve, it's really a wonderful, brain burning and deep game! It's a very underrated gem IMHO.
Lost Cities7.0This is a very interesting and brilliant design! With a very, very, very simple ruleset it plays lightning fast and has lots and lots of agonizing decisions! It's all about managing your timings and making choices with just a little bit less information than the minimum neeeded. It's really an amazing design! It's no wonder that women love it!
Lost Valley8.0Very, very good exploration and logistics game! The rules are very simple, the game couldn't be more German, and yet the game experience is really evocative of the gold rush. Whoever said that eurogames were devoid of theme is just plain wrong! There's a good amount of luck, but it makes sense in the context and there's still enough depth to reward good play. It's also extremely cheap (in Europe, at least) so there's absolutely no reason not to buy it.
Maharaja: Palace Building in India-
Mare Nostrum9.5Excellent game, oozing with theme, that really submerges the players in the ancient civilization leader role. Each civ is different and needs a different approach to succeed. Needs at least five players to really shine. The base game has some balance issues which were fixed in the expansion (and it's possible to use some of the rules of the expansion in the base game to correct these problems). Inexperienced players can throw away the game (most of the time to Egypt) and ruin everybody's experience because some of the powers are in key positions and their actions have not obvious implications. I think that's why it doesn't get a higher rating in this site. Avoid giving Carthague to the newbie, clearly explain all the implications of the trade process and how Egypt can win if people aren't careful during this phase and you should be ok. When played with a group of competent players, this is an absolute incredible experience. No game that I know can deliver the same amount of tension, involvement and an epic feeling of building a powerful civilization in the same time frame. This is a masterpiece in game design. Rating is for the base game plus expansion.
Mare Nostrum - Mythology Expansion9.5Excellent! Fixes all the balance issues found in the base game and adds lots of interesting new stuff . If the base game was awesome, MN+ME is the only way to play the game now. There are few more enjoyable gaming experiences than 6 player Mare Nostrum + Mythology! This IS the long pursued civilization game playable in 3 hours, search no further!
Mecanisburgo-Impulse buy. Sci-fi theme, deep and scalable game? Count me in! Still to play it though.
Meuterer8.0A complete surprise! A top game in a very small package! It's really a boardgame made of cards. Actually it sees less table time than it should because it comes in such a small and unexciting package.
Modern Art8.0This is a very hard game to rank. On one hand it has very simple rules, is very difficult to master and involves a good deal of long term strategy, clever tactics, reading the other players and bluffing, which is always a sign of a good game. On the other hand a bad player can ruin the game and render everyone's efforts useless, which can be very frustrating. But in the end, the sheer quality and simplicity of the design prevails, so I think this one of the greatest knizias i've ever played!
Mr. Jack8.0If you're looking for an excellent 2p deduction game, with a rich theme, quick playing time and good components, Mr. Jack is NOT it! It's an excellent 2p game, with a rich theme, quick playing time and good components, however it has little to do with deduction. Mr. Jack is all about positional play, bluffing and tactical creativity. It's still a very good and quick game which is always a pleasure to play. I highly recommend it!
Mü More-
Mykerinos7.0Very fast but also very interesting. It's a clean and really good take on the old area majority concept.
Napoleon's Triumph-
Neuland-Only 1 play, but boy does this make your brain hurt! This is an abstract, perfect information, brain burner, with a lot of opportunities for messing with the other players' plans!
Neuroshima Hex!8.0A unique and thought provoking game. A lot of interesting decisions to make, 4 entirely different factions to get acquainted with and very fast playing time. Still climbing that learning curve and eager to play it again soon...
Notre Dame9.0This is a typical example of a true german game. Clever mechanics, very nice components, deep and diverse strategies and several paths to victory all wrapped up in a perfectly polished and balanced package. Player interaction is subtle and the seating order is very important. It reminds me of Puerto Rico although the game mechanics and theme are totally unrelated. It's a very Alea new Alea release... excellent! The Alea guy is a genius game developer! [UPDATE]: I've been playing this alot on BSW (at least for my standards) lately and I really like it. There's a definite learning curve and games between experienced players are a totally different experience. Raised my rating to a 9. [UPDATE]: Played this a lot and burned out a little. Still think it's a very good game and will be happy to play it but lowered the rating to an 8 after 30 plays.
O Zoo le Mio8.0Simple and fun game, that I really enjoy. You have to bid for tiles to be able to expand your Zoo in a way that allows you to attract the most visitors. This apparently simple and cute bling bidding/tile laying game is a real treat to play.
Pampas Railroads9.0Finally played and it's officially awesome! I think I like it even better than Wabash! It's a different kind of awesome, though! This is more strategic, predictable and slightly less screwage prone (although it's still present in a healthy dose). It's longer, deeper and less chaotic... and it's one of the greatest games I've ever played! It's one of Wallace's masterpieces!
Paths of Glory-Skimmed the rules. Need a rainy sunday afternoon to give this one a go...
Phoenicia8.0Like this one a lot and the rating keeps improving as I play it more. Quick and interesting economic game. See my review for more details: http://www.boardgamegeek.com/thread/235309
Powerboats8.0The cool and clever dice mechanic along with the fact that this is the only racing game that I know of where you get to choose your course instead of just changing lanes, make this one of the best in its genre! Highly recommended!
Princes of Florence, The9.5An all time classic! Tight, balanced, full of tough decisions and a pleasure to play. Really shines with the full compliment of 5 players, but it's also a very good game with 4. Never played with 3 or tried the official variant for 2, but I think it will be a very different game. In Princes of Florence you really need to have a long term strategy and you really need to be able to adapt it as you go along. I really don't understand the complaints about the lack of player interaction.
Princes of the Renaissance8.0This is, along with Age of Steam and Byzantium, a member of my holy trinity of Wallace games. Unlike the other two, this has very simple rules: on your turn you put a tile up for auction, buy a tile, start a war or pass. But under this apparently simple engine there's a very deep and complex game, full of strategic choices and tough decisions. There are several completely different ways to win and the game really rewards planing and strategic consistency. A player who doesn't commit to a path will most likely loose. But this is also a negotiation game and players are even allowed to exchange gold or influence, the 2 existing currencies. This is very true to the renaissance theme and really works gamewise! The level of negotiation present is entirely up to the group, though, and I've played games without any negotiation, where nothing was ever even offered and I've played games with a lot of offers and counter offers being made. I personally prefer the latter style of play, as I think it really makes sense and adds a lot of flavor, but I can understand that some people prefer it the other way around, because there are inherent dangers to negotiation heavy games (time constraints, ganging on one player, etc). All and all a great game, with a very rich theme and simple rules, which is unusual in a Martin Wallace game. And the rules are even relatively clear which is even more unusual!
Prophecy7.0Preliminary rating after one play. Fun adventure game. Fight monsters to gain experience, use experience to improve your abilities so you can fight tougher monsters and so on, until de final monster is defeated. The movement and guild systems work well tough and give the player some interesting decisions along the way. A little bit on the longuish side but it didn't feel boring. Must play again to see bow it goes... rating may go up or down.
Puerto Rico9.5Used to play it with the wrong rules and it's much better with the right ones! :) This is a real classic! We've been playing PR a lot and now that we have a core of relatively experienced players, the game is even better. This is a really good mix between tactics and strategy. You need to know where you want to go, but the tactical play in each turn is crucial! A player's actions really influence every other player's game, so the early complaints about lack of player interaction are ridiculous. The game is extremely balanced and it shows that a lot of work was made during development and playtesting. Wonderful game!
Race for the Galaxy9.5Wow, what a wonderful game! It has a very steep learning curve, because it's imperative to know the cards... and there are a lot of cards to know! But it's also a very deep game, with a lot of choices every turn and a quick playing time. It's gamer heaven!Comparisons to San Juan are a little bit off. Sure, there are roles and what you build is payed for with cards from your hand. However Race for the Galaxy adds a ton of new stuff to that basic concept that dramatically increase the both the options available every turn and the amount of possible winning strategies to pursue. I can see where the multiplayer solitaire complaints come from. There's no direct player interaction and some people probably won't like that. The interaction is there for sure, but in a more indirect and subtle form, kinda similar to Puerto Rico's. Unlike Puerto Rico though, in the first few games it's very difficult not to be overwhelmed with all the options available, so it's hard to pay attention to what other people are doing hence the complaints about lack of interaction. I expect this to change with experience, but this will never be the game for those among us who crave for direct, in your face, conflict and interaction.People like me who appreciate deep games, with a lot of interesting decisions, a huge amount of variety and possible strategies and subtle and complex interaction will be in heaven! UPDATE: I just can't stop playing this. There must be some kind of treatment...
Race for the Galaxy: The Gathering Storm-How could I not get this?
Reef Encounter9.0This one has grown on me with each play. First time I played I realized there was a lot of stuff to pay attention to but I wasn't able to plan and execute any medium term strategies. In the second play I was able to think ahead a little bit more and I realized there were a lot more tactical options available than I thought. In the third play it all clicked. Taking advantage of the open sea board is crucial not only because it allows you to set up ofensive and defensive moves, but also because the final score is very dependant on those final relations. I'm very eager to try this one again. Rating can go up.
Rommel in the Desert-
Santiago7.0The simple rules hide a very interesting negotiation game. As the game develops temporary aliances will form and then be destroyed in the following turn. The way that the negociation is included in the rules is very natural and organic to the game. Very impressive!
Schotten Totten8.0It has a Lost Cities feel to it, although it is a bit more strategic. It's also all about timing but players have more options each turn. It's a bit more complex than lost cities, but it's still a very simple game. Another winner from Dr. Knizia! Note: Played without the tactics cards.
Serenissima-Just one play, hardly enough for a rating. But I was very, very, very impressed with this. Wonderful relation between theme and mechanics and some clever mechanisms make for a unusually thematic game with all the positive stuff of your typical euro. I think we can play a full game in less than 2.30h, now that we know the rules.
Settlers of Catan Card Game, The8.0Very nice 2 player game. Deep, strategic and really conveys the feeling of building something bit by bit. There's also plenty of opportunities for some nasty forms of interaction. Very nice!
Settlers of Catan, The9.0The one that started it all and by far my most played game face to face. After 1 gazillion games played, I stoped for a while and played again recently. I was amazed with how good it felt. Great game!
Space Alert9.0Immensely fun! Very different game experience! This is really good stuff! Coordinate efforts quickly and effectively, or die a painful death in the cold and lonely space! Best Essen release so far!
StreetSoccer8.0Fast and fun 2p game. Players control a street soccer team and have to battle it out on the field. The rules are very simple, the components are nice (with the biggest meeples I have ever seen) and the game is very interesting. Position is everything and sometimes it's better to sacrifice the greedy benefit to avoid the scattering of your team over the field. There's a good amount of luck involved (a die is used to determine how much can the players or the ball move) but I think that the decisive factor is skill. The best player wins most of the time and it's simply a great 2p game!
Taj Mahal9.5Wow. This is probably the most agonizing game I own. There are 12 regions to fight for but no player can win them all. And the ones that try end up winning nothing. Taj Mahal has a simple set of rules and can be teached in 10 minutes but it's one of those games that gives the players total freedom to destroy themselves. Spend too many cards and you're out of the game! But with experience you learn to manage your resources and Taj becomes one of the most strategic, tactical and brutally interactive games available! Amazing!
Through the Ages: A Story of Civilization9.5I'm completely blown away! Simply put, this is one of the finest economy building games out there! There are lot of variables to juggle and a huge amount of options to ponder every single turn. Build farms, explore mines, discover new technologies, send your armies to crush your foes and impress the world by building amazing wonders! And in the end the strongest culture will prevail. Some components are flawed, the cards are not very good... but who cares? The gaming experience makes up for all of that and more! This has a real good chance of being my game of the year for 2007, beating even Race for the galaxy! That's no small feat!
Through the Desert-
Tichu6.0Rating can go up, after some more plays. It's hard to find opponents to play this oddly enough!
Tigris Euphrates9.5Having played it a lot online, I still can see myself playing this game for all eternity. It's really a timeless game, and a true masterpiece of game design! If you could achieve a higher state of existence throuh repeated playing of a game, this would be the game.
To Court the King6.0Clever and fun dice game. Yahtzee the gathering is the apropriate description. :) Best with 2 or 3 players, because downtime can be an issue.
Traders of Genoa, The8.0
Travel Blokus7.0Fun 2 players abstract. Simple rules and beautiful components make for a *very* girlfriend friendly game.
Tribune: Primus Inter Pares8.0Yet another worker placement game! This is Die Macher's creator take on the subject and the usual imaginative and interesting solutions are present. Schmiel's design adds a card game layer to the mix, several paths to victory and even configurable winning conditions. The result is a fast paced, gamer's game, with a lot of interesting decisions. A nice comeback from Mr. Schmiel!
Turn The Tide-
Twilight Struggle9.5Amazing 2 player cold war game! The players spread their influence around the world, overthrow governments and realign countries using clever card play, so they can be the dominant force when scoring comes. They also have to keep an eye on the defcon level, because a nuclear war equals an automatic loss. This is an area majority game with a lot of theme. All the cards represent real events that took place during the cold war. These events are very cleverly implemented and force the player to make really tough decisions. Hand management is crucial but the overall positional strategy on the map also plays a major role. Forcing the players to execute an opponent's event when they use the ops value is sheer genius and really enhances the hand management aspect! Why is this not a 9.5? Because I haven't played it enough, but I suspect it will be in a not so distant future. [Update]: This is a 9.5!
Um Reifenbreite7.0Excellent racing game! A little luck, some strategy and depth and a lot of fun, fun, fun! All the pieces are very funny too! It would be nice if it could handle more than 4 players.
Warrior Knights-Enjoyed the first play, although the rules were a little overwhelming and it seems to make a few things right. Conflict is encouraged not only because losing a battle isn't a big deal, but also because influence, which is the game's name for VPs, can only be obtained through conquest. So, turtling won't get you anywhere. There are a lot of interwoven mechanics and a lot of buttons for the players to push. Our first game lasted a long time, but most of it was spent reading the rules and understanding them, so I'm pretty confident that we can play a full 4p game in less than 3 hours. I'm very eager to play this again.
Wealth of Nations-This will be the next one on the table!
Wings of War - Burning Drachens6.0This is a FUN enjoyable game. It's very customizable so you can do a quick dogfight with a simple set of rules, or you can throw in more complexity and play some interesting scenarios. It's a strange mix between wargame and eurogame that works very well. I got WYB also, so I can play with more than 2 players!
