Afrikan tähti1.0This game is not good at all. You can tell it had been designed by a kid. It's shallow and not very coherent. In all a very poor design.
Al Cabohne6.0If you like the original game Bohnanza, I think you will be pleasntly surprised by this alternative. It's playable for one or two players. You can clearly tell that this game was designed for the sole purpose of providing the beans game for when fans are on their own or with only one more player. It's actually fun to play. It's nice even to kill some time when you're on your own. A bit like solitair on PC, and there are even a few things you can think about before you decide to make your move. The way you have to manage the mafia dudes, er... beans, is a nice touch. Nothing outstanding, but a nice cardgame to play on your own, and also good if you have a kid that really enjoys playing the original version and naggs you all the time to play it when it's only the two of you.
Alchemist8.4I find this to be a very interesting game that has sadly been very underrated. This game fits into a standard size boardgame collection from Amigo of which I already own Walhalla, another very good and highly underrated game. This one is a game about combining different ingredients out of 5 types to create or copy recipies for alchemy. Tere are 10 different pots that can hold up to 5 ingredients each. each recipy results into 2 different ingredients and victory points. there are some rules to formulate new recipies. The interesting thins about this game is that you have very little to get by at the beginning of the game, but every new recepy that is created has vast consequences on the rest of the game. And that is the interesting part. Figuring out how that works. You will need to play this at least some 2 times before you get the idea of it. But it is absolutely worth it. So try it out if you get the chance.
Alhambra - The Dice Game6.5Yatzie has been preaty difining when it comes to dice games. This is an example of that. It is related to the original Alhambra game in that players need to have majorities of a kind, and, of course the theme. It is well designed I think (and with design I'm simply refearing to illustration and context). This game is by no means original. I takes it's theme from Alhambra, and it's mechanics from Yatzie. But nevertheles I think it is a fub game that has combined the original elements of it's big brother and recycled the old elements of an obsolete old classic. Since it isn't original I won't give it a high score, but it is a fun game to play. It is especially neet because you can play it with players of all ages around the same game, since it is mainly luck based, it does give newbies the chance to win or at least to deliver a good fight against veterans. In all a nice game.
Babylon5.0Following certain rules you need to pile the stones till there is no possible move left, the player who did the last possible move is the winner. In all there are 12 stones in 4 different colors (so 3 stones each), this makes the game more a 2-player brain teaser then actually a game... some kind of competitive puzzle, but extremely simple really, just 12 stones on the table. It's nice though that it is extremely small... you can take it anywhere really.
Bang!9.0This is one of those games that doesn't come often. Great fun, brilliant theme adaptation to the game mechanics and awsome illustrations. This is one of the most played games ever in my group. It plays best with 5+ but we rearranged the rules so that it would still be fun with 4, so now, when we are 4 players we play without the roles and simple play last man standing wins. Each player gets one more life bullet then on character card, and by killing one of the players you get three cards as bonus. This isn't obviously as fun as playing with the roles at 5+ players and it might also take somewhat longer... but it's a good alternative for a 4 player game. Great and unmissable this one.
Bang! - A Fistful of Cards7.5cool addition to the game. When you want to play BANG! but would like to add some twists to the game just for kicks, throw this one in.
Bang! - Dodge City9.0It's BANG! 2, New characters, same cards mixed up with some new ones. You can play this as a stand alone game in the exact way you play the original or you can shuffle a whole bunch of cards into the original. Keeps a brilliant game brilliant!
Bayon7.0It's an ok game. Once again a tiny deck of cards. This one though doesn't need so much space as Meuterer or Im Auftrag des Koenigs. But on the other hand it isn't as good as either of the other two. The neat thing is that you have to try to remember your opponent's progress. The game is more like a race, the method to receive gold is pretty obvious and streight forward so there is not much strategy involved, but you can try hindering your opponent's progress by denying access to a continent or hire one of their archeologists (which is more expensive for you though). It's an ok little game...
Beowulf: The Legend8.0After I got Lord of the Rings I realised that this game takes many ideas and playing mechanics from it. It's still a good game since this one is competitive rather then cooperative. And I love the shape of the board. It has a great and original design with fantastic illustrations by John Howe. The game is mainly about risk manegement, so you can figure there is some amount of luck in it. But you also need to be clever enough to know when is best to give up on the main episodes, so that you can keep more cards then your opponents for those episodes that you find more importnant. So in all I think this is a quite original game, despite the similarities to the lord of the ring game. It looks great, has great components and plays very well. It's fun and does a good job in creating tension throughout the game.
Blue Moon8.5Great two-player card battling game! I like pretty much everything about it. The different design for every people. The plastic dragons, even the board which isn't really a board but rather a card organizer or refference sheet. A good Knizia game (whom I think to be pretty overrated) as opposed to Lost cities. Now I got myself three expansion decks. This was a great thing to do since it gave the game a very refreshing boost. It also made me aware of how different this game can be played with the different decks. Specific strategies fitting specific decks. Absolutly great...
Blue Moon City7.5I like the idea involving the different peoples after playing this. There's a lot of different combinations one can come up with, which is interesting since the game idea is based on the story that the peoples that battled each other in Blue Moon come now together to build Blue Moon City, so you use cards from different peoples in a play turn to maximize your efficiency... neat!
Blue Moon Expansion - Buka Invasion6.0This is by far the most distinct deck of all, mainly because it brings completly new and unique cards that require new rules, such as the bluffing cards and the ships. It's interesting, but I think so far the pillar is the coolest deck.
Blue Moon Expansion - The Aqua8.0Very neat! Was very surprising, I generally am not too fond of thematic elements connected to water in the fantasy world, but this one was quite neat. Although the way you play it isn't too destinct to the two basic decks, there are some nice new twists to this deck, such as using the floods to force your opponent to withdraw, very nice indeed.
Blue Moon Expansion - The Flit8.0The Flit expansion is very interesting. The pair icon is very nice, and the retreive icon is also very fitting to the decks theme. Quite satisfying :) This has become one of my fav decks. The characters are pretty much all very powerful in their abilities despite low elemental power. I find it plays well against the Khind or the Mimix decks.
Blue Moon Expansion - The Khind8.0The Khind deck is probably the most distinct deck I got so far. THe ganging is a great idea and makes playing this deck a very different affair as opposd to all other I got so far. Most interesting.
Blue Moon Expansion - The Mimix8.0Interesting. This deck can give quite a blow. If the player has one dragon on his/her side, he/she can finnish the game with one blow by pairing the strongest Characters, adding free characters and a booster. to obtain a very high attack (like 14+) and, by playing 6 cards at once securing the two missing dragons. Can be quite surprising.
Blue Moon Expansion - The Pillar8.5I loved this deck. Great characters, great boosters. It's as they say though, the character names truly suck!! Very bad indeed! But I like that this deck enphasizes on very unique booster cards. Very nifty.
Blue Moon Expansion - The Terrah8.0A nice deck. The antagonists to the Vulkas. Thing about this one is to know when to retreat so to start a new battle on Earth elemen... still, not defenceless on fire either.
Bohnanza8.0Surprisingly fun game! Became instantly one of our favourit openers by now, but we can't play it too late in the evening since it is accompanied by a lot of screaming and shouting due to desperate attempts to cut the best deal with the active player!
Buccaneer8.0This game is much more then meets the eye. You wouldn't guess by the way it looks that it might actually make you use your brains. YOu need to do some basic calculations to figure whether assaulting a ship is or not worthwhile, since you need to pay the whole crew, and that is where the game actually shines. The crew you use to assault the ship is a combinations of your pirate(s) and soem of the other players' pirates. So you need to pay other players, and if you don't earn enough with an assoult you don't go out only empty-handed, but you also need to pay the other players out of your own pocket. The problem is that the different ships can only be assaulted by crews of different sizes, and if aren't careful you end up with a crew far greater then a ship requires and that's when you lose big time, you also need to remember what pirates are in your crew, since every player has 5 different pirates and each one of those costs a different amount... you will have you head spinning around very soon... And still this game is very fast paced, you play it in little time, players have a great laugh, the components are very nice and it is a smalle sized QueenGames format. In all a very fun game and a satisfying addition to my collection, I comend it to anyone that enjoys a light but not brainless, fast-paced game.
Carcassonne8.5A classic! In the meantime I got about every expantion there is (except The River I), if you combine all of them it get's about the messiest game there is. The Inns and Cathedrals stayed with the basic game ever since, never take it out. Traders and builders is the best expantion in my oppinion and stays as well, the only problem is if you play with both the tower and the princess dragon expantions... WHAT A MESS!! Never play with both simultaniously. We keep all the peaces though we just ignore the special tiles from the expantion we don't wanna play with, I just can't help myself, it looks great when all the tiles are on the table...
Carcassonne - Inns Cathedrals7.0It's an o.k. expantion, just added two new scoring tile-types and the bigger meeple, but nothing really original about it, which makes it actually an expantion we never took out of the base-game since we started using it.
Carcassonne - The Count of Carcassonne5.0If you throw this one in with the dragon + the tower expantion... that's a puzzler not a game...
Carcassonne - The Princess the Dragon8.0This is much more original, the dragon can be a pain in the ass, which makes this game much more exciting (or frustrating for some). The fairy allows players to do something when they have no more meeples to play, and then there is this very mean princess tile... ouch!
Carcassonne - The River II5.0just to make it a bit prettier. Not really very functional though...
Carcassonne - The Tower8.5This was a nice surprise. With a completely new and original addition. I think the idea with the tower is great, players now really concider sacrificing meeples for the rest of the game just so they don't have to bother with the towers anymore, or having to pay points in exchange for their enprisionned meeple. It's very messy though if combined with other expantions, especially the princessdragons.
Carcassonne - Traders Builders8.5Think this is my favourit expantion from the Carcassonne family. The pig, the builder and the special resource tiles are really refreshing to the game's original concept.
Carcassonne: The Castle8.0I liked this game a lot. I think it's easy to overlook the subtleties though, which is why this game might have done not so good, especially among carcassonne fans. I like the way several expantions of the original have been integrated and how the rules where adapted to better suit a competitive 2-player carcassonne game. I think the problem with the original as a 2-player game is that, since the game is not confined to a limited area, players tend to builto each in different directions, so there's not too much interference as in this one, since here, the playing area is limited by a mold, there is no other options really, other then trying to steal away the opponents' road, or tower or house. The fact that you can obtain the wall tiles by landing your score counter directly on it is interesting as well, since in this game, other then in the original carcassonne, you don't simply score as much as you can with every meeple, but you actually try to count how far away from the next wall tile you are and try to score those exact points. One thing that might feel confusing is that there are no restrictions towards how you extend the houses, the towers and the courts; players simply can place these side-a-side with no restrictions, only the roads follow the carcassonne standart rules in that they need to be given continuity. This mind feel weird at first, but I feel this was a good call in terms of how the rules reflect the game play, since, as mentioned before, the designer opted in narrowing down the playing area for a more competitive game, if the placement rules were the same as the original game, players would most likely very soon by out of options when trying to fin a place to play the tiles they'd be drawing... So in all, I can understand that people out there find this game a lesser version of carcassonne, me myself though, after carefully considering all these adaptations and subtle rule changes... consider this to be actually a quite worthy adition to the carcassonne familly and a better options for two players over the original game.
Catan Dice Game6.0Fourth Yatzie clone I got. And so far, this one is the closest to the original premisse. So the less original I'd say. It's still an ok fun game, and I mainly bought it to keep beating my own records, since my job got me to a desolate and lonely part of the Douro Valley (Where PortWine is produced). It's probably the less inspired of all four games. My top 4 Yatzie clones: - To Court The King - Knighsts - Alhambra Dice Game - Catan Dice Game
Catan: Cities Knights9.0This is probably the gratest expansion made for a game, makes the basic game so much different and awsome that playing the basic alone or with the expansion is like choosing between two different games! Great!
Caylus9.5This is an excellent game!! I think many of the players that claim not to like it simply don't like it because of the hype there was as it cam eout. It is an extremely good creation. All elements come together in a very nice way. It is a complex game, and although many people claim lack of player interaction in this game, I think otherwise. Players are able to freely negotiate several things among each other, such as worker placement, building construction and most importantly the movement of the king's henchmen that are controling the progression of the constructions and simultaniously determine the speed at which the game progresses, so these are very important to the game since they may also prevent some workers to generate any results to their owners, and that can come to a high cost. It's complexity comes manly to the way the different sections intervine. The board has 3 main areas, the castle; the road (village) and the favours of the king! The way these are related is extrememly well handled, and players need to pay attention to all of these ellements in order to think about a strategy for their next moves. In all a brilliant design, it's not often that such a game wiht this deep level of strategy and planning is created. I recomend this one with no doubt to all that enjoy a complex game which demands a deep involvement and focused analysis of every element in the game, active or not! A very impressice game, which on top of all plays very well with any number of players.
Chess10.0Perfect! Both players have the exact same resources in the exact same layout! No room for luck, no silly excuses: you play right you win, you play wrong you loose! No secret cards, no hidden advanteges, transperent and simple, yet very deep and complex! Best game ever invented. I won't give any other game a perfect score, the best any other game can get compared to this one is 9.9 at most. No other game will ever be this good. The more you play the more you discover, the more you share with your opponent the more you learn. It is philosophy, it is ideology, it is life-style... all crammed into this one huge awsome fantastic game. The absolutly best! You can challenge me enytime on gameknot.com, my nick is the same as here.
Citadels9.0One of my favourit cardgames next to BANG! cool character select system and awsome design. The way players atempt to guess the opponents' choices is what makes this game shine, and since all players select character cards from the same deck... you can guess, thing is that one is always left out, so the secon player has only a 50% chance guessing which character the 1st choce... you can see where this is heading after the 3rd player is chosing, and then the 4th, and 5th... etc. Fantastic little card game with a great fun intrigue and chest stabbing. The illustrations are fantastic.
Citadels: The Dark City Expansion8.0Nice expantion set. Great new characters and special buildings. But don't expect to find too much in this one. just a set of not too many new cards and the wooden king token to substitute that silly card.
Condottiere8.5A small and very clever card/war strategy game. Plays very well, simple to grasp, and a nice subtle strategy that provides a great fun-factor to the game. Very good. I got the 3rd edition (FFG), don't know the previous ones, but this one is very good.
Die Sterne Stehen Richtig8.0Tricky card game! Don't let the fun illustrations fool you. Working out the constalations is far more difficult then it seems at first, especially at the beginning of the game, when you have little influence over the stars! As you summon new demons though, things start to get gradually more reachable, although other players will be messing things up greatly. It's a fun brain sizzling game, with great conept art. Good one!
Dracula9.0I love this game! Unfortunately, this game didn't get many good reviews at the time it came out. Almost all players seemed to agree upon the fact that it is easeir to win whilst playing with Van Helsing rather then Dracula. Me myself too, thought it was a somewhat unbalanced 2 player game, favoring the Van Helsing player. But I was so taken by the lovely design and theme that I wouldn't give up on it. I insisted in always playing as Dracula, and finally I got the hang of it. It isn't unbalanced... you just have to play the game differently when playing D. This game is, above all, a memory game, and a fantastic one on top of it. Try it out enough and you'll see eventually ;) My favourite game in the Kosmos 2-players series!
Ebbe Flut8.0After decoding the rules thanks to a fellow geek, I finally had the chance to try this one out and it's super! Great headcracking two player game and a nifty solitaire game as well. Outstanding.
Entdecker: Exploring New Horizons7.0This is a very nice family game, it's good to play with younger or less experienced players, since it is very easy to pick up but also challenging enough to captivate players interrest until the end of the game. It's also a fairly short game, which is a good thing for newcomers. This title is turning into a franchise now, I got knowledge of the Jade, Desert and Demon versions... I looked up both the jade and desert versions on doctor easy's page... the jade version seemed preaty shallow to me, but the desert version cought my attention. So for those that enjoy the original game... keep your eyes opne for the newcomers, my bet goes to the desert one!
Familienbande8.0This is a very nice card game. It is about creating a family tree in which you try to play card in a way to create new couples that host the best genes. Each card has a combination of 3 genes so when you got a couple you have a total of 6 genes. These may contain several genes of the same kind or even, since there are only 5 different genes, you'll always have at least one repeted. As you do so, though you might give other players good combinations too. So you will try to make your gene the most represented in the couple, problem here though is that you most likely reveal yourself, since the gene that you represent in secret. If other players know, they might try to screw you. Since cards in your hand at the end of the game count negative points, during the game you always try to play with as few cards as possible, which makes for accordingly few options. So in all this game is very well accomplished considering the size of it. I must say, I was quite surprised as I first played this one. Very nice indeed.
Fearsome Floors7.5It's a fun game. since the board is a grid it's easy to calculate your moves, and if there are many players and you're first to play you also know it's very likly you'll be screwed. Screwing is easy due to the board-design, this might put some off, but I like it because of that. This is a top notch Screw you while I save my ass game
Goa9.0It's a brilliant game. I like the auction, and the emphasis on efficiency. The way that the different production columns intervine is very clever, I also enjoy the strategy to combine several columns, even though the combo Spice/expedition seems to be the most efficient I never use it and try to block it with either Spice/Colonists or Spice/Boat with some tax collection in the middle. But I think this is what Goa is mostly about, trying to find a good balanced strategy and respond efficiently to the inconsitant outcome of the auction. No doubt Ruediger Dorn's best game so far. I tried the combo colonist/boat recently, worked out very well. Think I'll be trying this one more often hence forth.
Guillotine6.5Very fun starter. The illustrations a very fitting, every action card (60 in all) is different, plays extremely easy. It's not an awsome game, but a very nice starter for the evening, especially if you're playing with newcomer, makes the introduction fun and easy.
Heimlich Co.8.5Awsome. Such easy and simple rules, yet tricky. With the standart rules you point the fingers at each other and do false accusations and speculate loud out trying to influence the way your opponents play. With the advance rules, the game suddenly feels like you're in a morgue, nobody talks cause no player wants to give away their hunch! Excellent game this one!!
Hera and Zeus8.0Traded Aton for this one on the 26th Oct. 2007... I'll have to wait a few day now before I can play it... got it today (2nd Nov) will try it out during weekend... It's a very nice 2-player game. It has good replay value and is challenging every time you play it. Since the layout is always determined by the player, the game is played always in slightly different ways. It is the sort of game that tends to improve with players used to play as opponents, this is always appreciated in my personal oppinion.
Honor of the Samurai8.5I love playing this game. It is an excellent card game which you play in the fashion of CCGs, although this one isn't collectible, which is a +point for me (I used to play MtG, so I know what I'm talking about). It has a very good rules set, that make for some preaty tense gameplay, since the strongest player, despite receiving most points, also lives in fear of constant attacks, and if another players samurai is ronin, thus able to join a stronger player, that player even has to fear high treason. you play assassins, you play stealth thiefs, you hire bodyguards, build a castle, get yourselfs some cool weapons, lose honor, gain honor, make deals... a lot of things may happen in this game, and it gets increasingly difficult earning the few points you need to win the game, so especially the end game makes for some prety dramatic and intense 30 min of play! Very neat! In all, a great game!
Hornochsen6.0came along with Hera and Zeus that I got for trading in Aton... it's a fun game to play with at least 4 players, can't immagine it to be very good with 2, it's already somewhat shallow if played by 3 players. THis game is somewhat luke-warm...
Im Auftrag des Königs7.5I started being a fan of the adlung games with Meuterer. A deck of card that can be played just like a boardgame. That is a turn off for some players, since many of these games, including this particular one, require quite some space on the table to be played. But you can simply take it anywhere you like and it fits anywhere you like. And although being small, many adlung games are fairly comlpex games. This one is no exception, it might even be a bit confusing for first timers to this game (even experienced players), but once you played a round you get the idea, although it requires a few more plays before you start getting the hang of it. The questing, tournaments among two players, in all a good game as all I got so far from Adlung. Spot on once again ;)
Im Reich der Wüstensöhne8.0Very nice light boardgame, in the lines of Exploring new Horizons. Great new ideas to keep things fresh and sufficiently different from the original concept. Very good game components as well, and I did like the character ability thing, nice addition.
Intrigue7.5What a messy game :D absolutly no space for strtategy or planning... if people like you, you may win, if they don't, you're doomed, you most likely win this game though if nobody cares for you, if people don't pay you any attention, you'll win for sure, so make sure not to piss anyone off. But it's great fun because of that.
Jambo8.0This game is like MtG gone business! PLayers try to buy goods at low price and sell 'em at high price. In the midst they use cards to try and scew the opponent. The cards are all fine, players draw from the same deck and try playing best according to circumstances and available cards in hand. I think this is a fine game, not the best in the kosmoms 2-players collection, but defenetly on the top rank. I still prefere the likes of Dracula or Starship Catan.
Kama Sutra Game, The9.0I do own a Kama Sutra game, it is very unlike this one on BGG though, the one I got is much fun and it plays very nicely if both players are into it. Gay couples will have to assume male vs female roles though :P It's nice since you can figure out the other persons sexual fantasies and it is a very cool way to become more intimate with the person you like best ;) ... Now that I come to think of it... it looks a bit like Reiner Knitzia's Lost Cities, one central board with 4 spaces for card laying, and each player places one card on two of the four spaces (2 for one player and 2 for the other) and then they do some action oriented stuff untill they feel like playing more cards, highly anticipating the big bonus card!! no wait... this is not like Lost Cities at all... thus... much more fun :)
Knights7.0One more fun Yatzie clone to the collection, the third one so far. And it's as fun as all other. This one is very fun because it is confrontational. You use dice combinations to conquer fortresses and special cards, and since you can try conquering your opponents' fortresses, it makes this a very fun game to play as an opener.
Kutschfahrt zur Teufelsburg, die9.5This is one of my very favourite games. You can play it with 3 up to 10 players teaming up into two factions. None of the players knows though who his team mates are. Now the game mechanicas is the great thing about this game, if you win a fight you can peek at the attacked players faction card, and all other players now start speculating according to your behaviour towards that player. So this game is all about givin secret clues to your teammates when you know they are but they don't know that you are. And it is all about reading players' behaviour. your start to triangulate player behaviours to figue out who's who, and that is when the fights get ever more tricky, with players suporting each other, using items, to favour the outcome, and then another pulls out a great job abillity and finishes the fight off with an unexpected outturn. The cards look fantastic and the game fits the theme like a glove. All this in a tiny deck of cards for a great price. I even bought myself a second copy since I accidentaly drove over my first one and totally tore the box... mysteriously though, the cards are still in superb conditions. EXCELLENT GAME!!
Let's Do Lunch!7.0It's a silly game but it's kinda fun actually. it has somewhat from Othello, but obviously not nearly as sufisticated and elegant as Othello.
Lord of the Rings8.0Got it on the 23rd of June 2008, traded for Colossal Arena and Mag Blast 3rd Ed. It looks brilliant, it plays the same. It's a great game, production value is very high, although I'd rather have those hobbits less accurate in design and more resitent, they look extrememly fragile. Sauron is super though. Otherwise the game is outstanding. Will have to try it with more then two players though. Score might change. Got myself two expantions (Friends Foes + Sauron) and received them on 4th of August 2008. Reat through the rules and it looks all very promissing! Good game even better? Might rise the score for that!!
Lord of the Rings - Friends Foes8.5I find this expantion does indeed make a good game better. One of the toughest things about the base game is, to my mind, discarding much needed and always very scars cards (either by dice roll result or by event)! Especially mean was player elimination if dice result shows discarding 2 cards and that player wouldn't have any! Now players get a bit more control, it doesn't make the game easier, but at least they don't have to discard anymore cards. The foes come in instead! These provide a well integrated alternative to the discarding problem, this means players now have more available choices. Also with a great new double sided cenario board (Bree and Isengard) and the additional (very few!! which is excellent) rules, players now may take shortcuts to Mordor! Great addition to the original, adding some very subtle fine-tuning and some great new cards. Now I just need to try the Sauron expantion and try how well it plays with both the expantions.
Lord of the Rings - Sauron8.0Haven't had the chance to fully explore this one yet. I'm looking forward though since I enjoy the idea of one agains all in the sense of the classic schotland yard from ravensburger... Also I prefere cooperative games where there is an anemy that's not the board but an actual person... so where you get to clash agains another brain rather then a game mechanism... so let's just hope this one's at least as good as everything else I already played...
Lord of the Rings - The Duel8.0Very cool! Great thing that bridge, the cards are very nice and I like the figures. Reflects very well the battle from the story, great adaptation.
Lost Cities6.0It's as they say... great spousal game. But It's nothing special really. Very simple, very easy, and since the victory depends almost intirely on the cards the players draw, it gives a less experienced player the chance to win a boardgameguru. But I think that this game is highly overrated. Other games of Kosmos' 2player collection are far better... most of them actually.
Louis XIV8.0A great game with fantastic presentation and very good mechanics! I tend to get really nervous playing this one... Most common thought during an opponents turn: NO!! Don't play there you bloody idiot!! This was the first game I played from Ruediger Dorn, which served as the main reason for buying Goa afterwards. But this is still one of my favourite games.
Mall of Horror9.0This is a brilliant game. Anybody who loves a game of backstabbing, constant threat of betrayal and extreme player interaction, then this is for you! The system works great! Players openly discuss alliances and above the table and secretly below it all at the same time (avoid glass table!). The weekest link victim select system is great! The whole game is about speaking and negotiating your way through survival. If you are the player with the least advantage, then that's your advantage! Other players don't see you as a threat so you can actually be dicisve in a leading player vote clash, and this might just negotiate your way back to a healthy couple of cards that might be the hidden card, some zombie-slaying weapon or any other of the extrememly useful but very limited cards! All just fits great, I usually am not much into theme based games and rather pay attention to the game mechanics, but this one... just has it all!!
Manitou8.0Very nice card game. Players try to carefully balance their hand for each season, noone wants to be the overall strongest player since that means penalty of -10 (which is pretty harsh). And with the integrated rock-paper-scisor mechanics, players must simultaniously play hunting cards mixed with fighting cards, these ones able to emprison opponents' cards, worth few points, but therefore crippling the opponents' options for future hunting seasons. Great card game.
Mastermind7.0basic, but cool for kids.
Meuterer8.0Like this one a lot, same character select system as Verraeter, that also inspired the system for Citadels. This is a very good game in all.
Monopoly: Stock Exchange8.0Has anybody manneged to play this in less then 8 hours (till the end I mean)? But I actually like it... a lot!
No Thanks!6.0very basic, can be fun if not played too often. When we play it, we play it only once to see who will be the starting player for the next more serious game.
Othello8.0This is a very good abstract game. Also known as reversi.
Palastgeflüster7.0The problem with this game is that it was Adlung's first released game after Kutschfahrt! This latter one is an outstanding game of intrigue and mystery where two teams face off against each other without any of the team members knowing who their teammates are in the beginning of the game. When I heard of this game for the first time I though Another great game coming my way. The title Palastgeflüster implies more intrigue and loads of player interaction! Turns out it is nither! So it was a bit disapointing in the sence that the game isn't at all what I was expecting. Nevertheless, it is a very fun card game. Players will have a laugh on this one, just don't expect anything nearly as cool as Kutschfahrt (in my Opinion the jewel in Adlung's collection!!)
Poison7.0A fun card game that may start the evening as an opener. A good adition to the Amigo card games collection which I'm becoming quite fond of.
Puerto Rico9.0As brilliant as ever. Great system. Everything is related in this game, and picking a role will have other players do the same thing. So one of the interesting mechanics of the game is to chose when's the best moment to chose a specific role, trying to minimize other players benefit from it. Loads to think about, much management... very good game indeed!
Pyramiden des Jaguar, die8.0I love the 2-player games of Kosmos, this one is my 9th game in this collection, of which I found Catan card game and Lost Cities somewhat disapointing. This one though, as expected, is quite nice. It has some broader range for strategy, since both players play an open game but need to speculate on possible cards to be in the game, since ten are left out. So you can't always be sure. This makes for a fairly exciting match which isn't brainless at all. So congrats to Kosmos for a further great game in this overall (some minor disappointments, but nothing's perfect) great collection which I find very pleasing. Way to go!!
Quarto!8.0Love this one, very tricky:)
Quest for the Dragonlords7.0Despite the flaws there is something really epic about it. That hard travel to the wastelands in an attempt to find the Dragonlords in order to wipe out the enemy has a really cool feeling to it. Like it quite a bit, I admit though that there are some flaws in the design and maybe some rules needed to be changed slightly... I'd give it around 9...
Quicksand7.5It's better then it looks! And it looks quite bad... which means it might acurally be not so good a game... but it is a fun game to tell the truth. You don't get the idea just from reading the rules, but since you have a fairly limited hand of cards and the identities are secret, you'll find yourself playing other game pieces quicker then you think. This makes for some interesting diversions, especially if your opponents start moving your playing piece :) It's an overall good and fun game, just a pitty about the weak illustration and board design.
Relikt6.5It's an o.k. card game. Probably Ruediger Dorns less inspired creation, but it still can get fun with at lest 4 players.
Ruse Bruise7.5Well... if there is one thing this game is not... is original! Very similar mechanics to Citadels and some inspiration from To court the King too. It's not a bad thing since both the other games are great and the ideas are actually very well blended without making it feel like a copy-paste game. But when you first play this one, if you know any of the other (but especially Citadels), you will think that you've been cheated. After a first game round though, you will probably forget about it. Although similarities (even the illustrations) you'll find it has enough differences to make it worthwhile I believe. Although even some characters are similar (such as the assassin) the big difference is that each player has his own deck containing all the characters, so you know exactly what your up against. So rather then figuring out which character your opponent is going to pick this turn, you'll find yourself thinking about WHEN he's going to play it. It's fun, especially with 4+ players, but nothing special, and even less original...
Saboteur7.0A fun card game. Those mining dwarfs are funny. Either the good guys (majority) or, depending on the number of players, non, or more (but alway minority) saboteurs to spoil the game to the good guys. It's nothing overly original but it's a fun starter to get the players into the mood of backstabbing games like Intrigue, Mall of Horror, Kutschfahrt or SoC for example.
Settlers of Catan Card Game, The4.0pretty lame... was quite a disapointment. The resource mannagement can get very messy, and the trading, which is what Catan is all about, is completely useless in this game. It's just a one-on-one take where there is very little interaction (with little interaction I mean, no communication... except maybe something like now I will destroy your building or now I'll steal some of your resources, hehehee!)
Settlers of Catan, The9.0THE classic.
Shadows over Camelot9.0This game is just awsome, it is seldom a weekend at which this game doesn't come on the table. This game is mainly a psychological defyance. You don't know whether there is or not a traitor in the game, and this uncertainly is what makes this game what it is. In fact, the traiter (if in game) can't do that much more harm then any other player could, what is important to the traitor is doing certain actions at the most critical times. But the simple fact of uncertainty makes all players somehow play in a very enclosed way, always analysing each other trying to detect the trator among them. And if one of the players should make a wrong move accidentaly, it immediatly triggers the side look syndrome on other players. He may not be the trator, but one wrong move was enough... so, despite being a cooperative game.. it's not as linear as that.. you need to try it to get it. So... please do when you get the chance.
Shadows over Camelot: Merlin's Company8.0Nice addition to the base game. Although nothing particularly outstanding has been added (like a new quest would be nice), the new knights are nice, the long yearned-for figure and player sheet(s) for the 8th Knight is in and the new figure of merlin as a NPC. Good new cards and the new Travel deck. Makes moving around Camelot that much more exciting, never knowing if something good or evil happens! Nice touch :)
Shogun9.0This is a fantastic game. I looked around at many geeks' oppinions about it and there seemed to be a lot of debate about the kind of game this is. I don't really think that's important, you just play the game for what it is! And what the game is is high quality components mixed with a great set of rules that make this by far one of the best games in my collection. If I had to tell you what kindof game it is I'd say it is a medieval japanese set war logistics game. It's important that Japan is the set since in japanese culture the honor plays a large role. So battle is not all there is, in fact, bellic manouveres and assaults are fairly scars in this game, what players so is, on one hand trying to avoid defeat in case of an attack, by strategically placing their units, and at the same time rise buildings that ensure honor, thus points. This is mixed with the constant preasure of internal peasent revolts, due to tax and rice collection, needed to buy units and buildings and to feed the army. In all a very good game with a fair degree of complexity that does require some thinking ahead, good planing some strategic considerations. One of the very good ones to me!
Starfarers of Catan8.5Very good version to the original premiss. Great production value!
Starfarers of Catan 5-6 Player Expansion5.0I didn't like the rule changes for 5 or 6 players... so this is more like a spare set for broken pieces...
The ships have a few broken bits everything else is great!... :S
Starship Catan9.0Got it today:D (19/07/2007) was a gift out of nowhere from a danish guy around here (I better not say his name, otherwise people go and ask him for free games). that was one geeky dude!! Thanks pal. It is a much better game then catan card game, players try to remember in which galaxy the best deals can be made, sell expensive - buy cheap then build. And the modules are a good idea and well implemented. Very nice 2-player game.
Stratego8.0Awsome 2-player strategy game, cool for someone who always wanted to learn chess but never really did...
Sumo!5.0Weird and crazy 2-player game... but I learned to love it...
Taluva8.0A nice tile laying game that I find to be aesthetically very appealing. It's almost as if the goal of the game is to make it as beatiful looking as possible and if possible also earning some points. Very nice. It's actually more tactical then it might look at first. If you just play it the way you'd play carcassonne for example it's just a simple race game to see who's the first to dispache his two types of buildings, but you can actually interfere quite havilly in an opponents game, since the towers and temples require specific conditions to be placed, you can actually, especially in the case of the temples mess in others' affairs. Can be quite interesting.
Ticket to Ride: The Card Game6.5I enjoyed playing this game more then I had anticipated. Although I think the rules don't quite reflect the theme, I still think the game has overall been accomplished quite nicely. It requires you to have a prety good memory if you wanna be sure you want to win, or at least manage to score all your tickets. The cards are of fantastic quality, very large, good material. They even use symbols for each color for colorblind people to be able to play this game, which is a very nice touch! I have played the original game only online, but I'm tempted to say that I prefere this one over the board game, since I don't really think that the game, for what it is, justyfies the price, so I'd rather have it as an easy to carry around, cardgame. Nice one this one!
To Court the King8.0Cool Yatzie clone... very cool yatzie clone. From all the yatzie clones I got (4 so far) this one is my favourit. The cards are just awsome, as well in design as in quality and I like their abillities. Basically you try to reach first through all the different level of cards until you reach the top cards: King and Queen! On the way up you use your collected cards to manipulate your dice results in different ways. I don't mind dice games as long as the game assumes itself as a dice game, which is the case of this one. I don't like Arkham Horror, since it is essentially a dice game pretending to be a big adventure... I rather play this one.
Trivial Pursuit - Globetrotter5.0What can one say about this... nothing really...
Walhalla9.0I don't know what it is about this game, I think it's a brilliant one. I absolutley love it, and ever more, I think I rose the score twice now! The more I play it the more I seem to warm to it. I think it's good looking, the components are great, the game mechanics are excellent and there is a lot to think about, still, not a heavy game, I think it achieved some kind of perfect balance between heavy-style german game and easy to grasp quick starter. And I tell you! It's a darn good balance, fucken awsome this game. Good value for size. It is a very competitive game, and specially during the last raid one has to do some very tough decisions based on the current scoring. The scoring is by the way an important part of the game, it's always according to the score that the decisions should be made. A fantastic 4 player game that plays equaly well with 3 players too.
War of the Ring9.5Awsome game. Simultaniously the best military and best fantasy game around. The feel of the story has been adapted brilliantly to the game: sneeking around with the fellowship, flying around with the nazgul, sprinting with the good guys, conquering with the shadow armies, trying to hold the fortresses with a handfull of free peoples armies... everything is just superbly reflected in this game. Best two player game there is.
Warrior Knights9.0Cool game, I loved playing it. I was a bit reluctant at first, but once played :D veeeery nice. Love the way players need to manage warfare, politics and church intervention. Am very eager to play more to check on strategies and stuff like that. Player interaction is a BIIIIG yes yes in this game. Players can gang up against each others, players can influence the difficulty level during the game due to the assembly. And thanks to the alternative rules there is a lot of space for creativity and hilarious situations during the whole game. This is defenelty a fav for the next few months, even though it takes a lot of time playing (playing time will probably reduce with game experience, it's still new).
Wizard8.0The most played card trick game in my group. It's pretty clever, only the illustrations suck, luckily they are completly irrelevant... but still there...
Zing!6.5cool trick card game. One can never complain about having a bad hand, since in this case all depends on the bids, so if you got a bad hand, you don't bid, thus you won't get -points (if you play right of course).
Zombies!!!7.0It is as it says on the box... This one's a no-brainer. So the group really needs to be in the mood for this one. If so, then it can be a really fun game, where you try and chop those zombies dead, whilst screwing the opponent players the best you can... if they gang up against you though... there's no mercy in this game. But it's not for everyone. Fun this one. If only taking in account the game mechanics I'd probably give it only a 6, but I put another point on it for the great thrash-zombie concept!
Zombies!!! 2: Zombie Corps(e)7.0More of the same, with more cards and more tiles, one more helipad, so it might end sooner then usual, but that is something you can always control with some slight rules modification. In all... exactly the same as the original... thus... not too bad :)
